Auto Realm
« on: 22. December 2010, 19:49:24 »

Auto Realm at autorealm.sourceforge.net is an amazingly cool little program for mapping a campaign. If you've never looked at it, by all means do.

I ran into a problem, and I am flailing wild hoping someone can help out. When I downloaded Autorealm, I remember a usage agreement, which I agreed to. I didn't think much of it because mostly it seemed to pertain to publishing stuff and I figured "thats something I never do".

Of course, I had not yet heard of Dungeonslayers. Now I am thinking of posting a map or two, and "publish" can be such a slippery word. One person would think it might means selling. Another might think it includes posting, sharing... so I wanted to review the usage agreement and review what it meant to the creators. I seem to remember they wanted a small message on posted things.

But it's been... 2? 3? years and I cannot seem to find that agreement anywhere.
By any chance does anyone know where it might be? ???

I just went on over to http://sourceforge.net/projects/autorealm/ , downloaded the program, installed it, started it.

No agreements whatsoever popped up. The software ist under the GPL, so no problems there for you.

So if you want to play it safe, uninstall Autorealm, download and install the last version and everything should be just peachy.

Or simple try emailing the AutoRealm people about the topic so you can get an actual clarification :)

A good suggestion, and I took you up on it. I went to the website, found the email and sent it off.

No reply to my emails....
Hopefully they are having a wonderful time visiting family this holiday season and are taking a vacation from their computers.

However, l've looked and looked and looked, and I can find no assertion that you can or can not do anything with this program. Most discussion that occurs on the topic deals with the program itself and it's GNU/Copyleft status. The topic of restrictions or permissions to distribute a bmp or jpg file created by the program never seems to come up.

However, at...
http://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/autorealm/wiki/AutoRealmFaq

I found the following...

[NEW] Copyright matters: is it ok to use the maps for commercial use??
{{{ > Subject: Re: [AutoREALM] Maps in commercial products There is no restriction against using AutoREALM maps in a commercial product. The symbol libraries have been contributed with this knowledge. It would be nice (if possible) to get a mention, but not mandatory. --Andy Gryc }}}

That being the status of a commercial use, I can only assume that a non commercial use would be equally permissible.
