How about weit/weiten as in  Ascheweiten or Hellweit

I see it translates to wide/far. Does this speak to plains or expanses?  Is 'wastes' reading too much into the word?  Does it just mean 'great'?

Because Ashwide sounds stupid in english.  Ash Wastes or Ash Plains sounds much better.

I think expanse might be the most fitting translation in the case of the Ascheweiten; but then again, Ash Expanse sounds a little unevocative. Wastes is not a direct translation, but since the Ascheweiten are pretty wasted... It certainly sounds best and is not too big a stretch, imo.
In Hellweit I'd go for -vast. Hellweit as a word is just two adjectives slapped together, and -vast sounds much grander than -wide, which might better reflect the feudal nature of the land.

Hellweit - I think a nice translation would be "Bright Plains".  Does weit (wide or vast) usually mean flat - like plains?

What is the difference in meaning for Hellen Weiten v. Hellweit?

@ "Hellweit": It's just a name - there's no such word in German. Of course it reminds a native speaker on "Helle Weiten".

@ "Ewgwacht": "Evrwatch" would come closer.

Nope. We have the very simular but quiete antiquated word "Mahr" like in Nachtmahr (Nightmare), but I don´t think that it has anything in common.

To be honest, I know not enough about the background of the Hefrachbann to consider the better translation. But a "Bann" is normaly somethnig more negative than magic or spell. More like ban, curse or bane.

Hefrachbane sounds good to me.

The German "Hefrachbann" isn´t set in the genitive case either.

Found it - geduldet - "tolerated"

I'm struggling to find a comparable English equivalent. I want to say gypsy gnomes but that is not exactly correct (as Duldgnomes don't travel around) The word gypsy carries some negative connotation, as I think duld does and gypsies are usually inside a culture but outsiders at the same time -  but since it can be applied to a real world people, I think I'm going to avoid it.

Brook is not used much for tolerate -  better associated with a small stream or river.

I was thinking "City Gnome" - "City" implies that they are in an urban environment and most people know that cities are made up of lots of different cultures/races.

I think "arl" should be a variation of "earl". "-tum" is an endsyllable for area, dominion or ownership.

"Arltum" does not exist in German - it's simply a wordcreation of CK proposed to mark a duchy in Hellweit.
By chance, "Arl" shows a strong resemblance to "Earl" ...  ;)

tassmodalian Wyrzengrant? Tassmoda or Tassmodalia is a planet name and Wyrzengrant the name of a animal species.

The first part "Wyrzen" hasn't any meaning in german; the second part "grant" could come from "grantig" - the english translation would be "grumpy".
